This purchase started as a nightmare! I received the elliptical and it was so easy to put together. I did the whole thing alone and it less than two hours with no problems at all until I tried to use it. The main wheel portion made the most horrible squealing noise you have ever heard in your life. I called Nautilus/Schwinn and they were very nice and scheduled to send a technician to my home. A week later, still no call from the technician so I recalled Nautilus/Schwinn who apologized and scheduled a technician again. A few days passed and still no call, I emailed Amazon and my only two options were replacement or refund. I chose a replacement unit, put the thing together again and now everything is perfect. This is a great trainer! Smooth workout, gym quality. I would give it 5 stars, but it is so heavy/difficult to move that I'm giving it 4. I thought I could roll it to the large closet for storage, but no way. Instead, it sits in the living room as a center piece. Took me about 2 hours to put together. Not too complicated. The workout is great! I can watch a movie or TV show without turning the volume too loud while my daughter's sleeping. It's super quiet. After WEEKS of reviewing ellipticals online and trying them out at my local Sears store, I settled on the Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer. Schwinn has been making quality exercise equipment forever. I can vouch for this because my parents still ride their 1980's Scwinn Air bike religiously. Plus the parent company is actually Nautilus. So I figured I couldn't go wrong.

Delivery was set up and delivered via Eagle USA. They called and set up a time and date that was convinient for me. The delivery guy even brought the box inside. The box itself was a little banged up and VERY dirty. About 4 hours later, (and a few cuss words here and there) I had one great machine!

I have only had this machine for a little over one week, but so far it has kicked my [...], but in a pleasant way. I can definitely feel the burn in all my major muscle groups. The ride is smooth and impact-free (which is why I sold my treadmill and bought this) and VERY quiet. The console LCD offers a variety of programs which are simple to follow if you are up for a challenge or just a stroll. The only "drawback" is that the LCD is not backlit, but who works out in the dark?

All in all this is a well built machine. It feels very sturdy on my hardwood floors and I haven't heard any squeaks as of yet. I was impressed by all the reviews that said that how quiet the machine was when I bought it. Assembly was not so bad (2.5 hours). Then the squeeking started. Just about after 100 calories burned, there would be a two distinct squeeks at a specific position of the flywheel. We called technical service and the service person called back on the 5th day (he needed to respond before 5 days) and scheduled a visit for a day 10 days AFTER that. I am a soldier who has recently returned from deployment. While I was deployed I injured both knees and am unalbe to run due to the impact. I had tried ellipticals while I was deployed and was quite impressed with the work out I got. When I returned I went out and started searching for one of my own. My goal was to keep it under $1000. I tried many different brands and discovered that not all ellipticals are created equal. Many of them are cheaply made and shake side to side or make alot of noise. The stride is very important. I am 6 foot tall and the 16 inch stride on some of them just didnt cut it. I ended up buying a Proform 160 from the Proform website since it had an 18 inch stride and seemed to be sturdy, however, after discovering how little they care about customer service, I cancelled my order. I ended up buying an Image 9.5 from Walmart. I used it for about 3 weeks and came to the conclusion that the foot pedals were spaced too far apart and it put pressure on my knees and made my hips hurt. After thinking about it for a minute it made sense to me, who runs with thier feet that far apart anyway. My feet almost land in a straight line when I run. So I set out to find one with closer pedals. Overall I tried almost 2 dozen different machines and finally found the Schwinn 430 at a fitness store. I tried the 418 and 438 also, but the 430 seemed to be the most comfortable to me. The 438 and some of the other brands seem to have a high arch on the upstroke. The 430 was very smooth and ultra quiet. It is very well made and should last for many years. Amazon had the best deal on it and had it to me in about 8 days. It is a very comfortable machine. After all of this I would say to anyone wanting to buy an elliptical, try alot of them, I tried all the ones at Sears, Oshmans, Academy and Fitness in motion. Make sure the stride length, pedal angle and pedal spacing are comfortable for you, after all, if its not comfortable you wont want to use it. The only thing I think could be improved on the Schwinn 430 is a backlit display. Luckily I work out with the lights on so its not a problem, haha. I tried many machines that were between $2-3000 and this one was still more comfortable to me. It is a heavy machine, so get help carrying it in, but you will be glad its heavy when you ride it. I bought this item after much research and this particular model was suggested to me by a friend. No problems at all with shipping; package was in perfect shape though only delivered to my back steps. I opened up the box and brought in pieces individually, with the flywheel being the heaviest (though I was able to bring in myself). It took me about 2 hours to put together. Instruction book was better than most I have seen, and only problem was the misprint in bolt sizes, but you can figure that out easily (as everyone has noted on their reviews). The elliptical's size is on the smaller size and fits well in my sitting room. Easily moved if need be.
In regards to the workout. I cross train on my treadmill and found this workout to be as effective. There are a variety of programs so you can vary your workout. The backward motion is a little awkward for me (I am 5'3") but found that holding onto the lower handlebars works well (versus the movable upper ones). The machine is very quiet, only slight squeeking coming from the upper handlebars that disappeared with a little WD40. It has very smooth movement and you can definitely tell a difference with increasing the level, which I was worried about as it doesn't have an incline as some gym machines do. The heel rise can occur when you do not sit back on your heels when working out, so you just need to be aware of your foot placement. The foot pads are comfortable and a good size.
Most of all, for those who do monitor their heart rate, I have a Polar F11 heart monitor (with chest strap) and this monitor is within a 3 beat difference at the most. I recommend to let the monitor read for a minumum of 45 seconds before you follow the rate. This held true for me even if pacing at 70 RPM's or above. I listen to my IPOD when I work out, so I have not used the book holder. The water holder holds 24 oz Polar Spring bottles without any difficulty taking out and replacing the bottle.

Our Schwinn 430 arrived yesterday, four days earlier than expected. My husband and I put it together in about an hour and a half, and it was relatively simple to do. All the parts were packaged and labeled very well and there was an insert with a correction to the instructions on step 2.

As for the feel of the machine, it's very smooth and sturdy. If you're not looking for any fancy electronics and are looking to save some $$$, it's worth getting it over the 418 and 438. The pedals on this model are made of plastic, not rubber, and are cheaper looking and feeling than the other models. However, with sneakers on, you probably won't notice the difference. Also, the handle bars with heart rate sensors are lower than the other models, but they don't feel too low, which I was afraid of.

All in all, I'm so glad I decided to get this elliptical machine. The whole transaction has gone very smoothly, and I'm working up a sweat already! The 18" stride is a good compromise for me(5'2") and my husband (6") and is comparable to the feel of higher-priced machines.

This is a fabulous product! My advice is to take everying out of the box carefully and layout all the parts. One bolt was listed in the instructions incorrectly. The bolts included were correct-just wrong reference in assembly instuctions. I just used process of elimination to figure out which ones to use. This elliptical arrived (on sale with free shipping!) in only 8 days. My husband helped me carry all the pieces upstairs, but I did 99% of the assembly myself... he helped with tightening a couple of things and holding up the front part so I could tighten the bolts on the stabilizer. But other than that, with a few breaks I did it in less than 3 hours. I used it this morning and was pleasantly surprised that I got a great workout. The one I'm used to at the gym has a rear flywheel, so this one feels different on my legs - but I can feel the burn! This is a good thing.

I would recommend this to anyone, very high quality for this price and sturdy. The only negative piece was the pre-greased parts were a bit too dry, so I had to spray them with lubricant and they were still very tight to insert. But with the help of a HAMMER we finally got them where they needed to go.

I really wanted to try a 430 in person before I bought it, but no retailer near me had one. I tried a 418 and decided to take a chance, and I am very pleased with the machine. It is sturdy, and an acceptable size, not too big for my living room.

Everything other reviewers have said about the instructions being inadequate is TRUE. The people at Schwinn were helpful about the typos though. We had to hammer one of the forks a little to get it moved into the right angle to attach but other than that, it was ok to put together.

My wife is rather prone to injuring herself when working out, so when she said she was interested in buying an elliptical I was honestly afraid it would be more money wasted on yet another machine that would never be used. I could not have been more wrong! My wife and I have used the machine for nearly three weeks without a single complaint. It provides an awesome workout in much less time than we used to spend on the treadmill. The only two problems (if you can call them problems) were 1) way too much packing tape securing parts inside the box-it was a nightmare just preparing to assemble. 2)When securing the base rail to the main frame, it was somewhat difficult to get the bolt/nut threads to engage, although I finally secured them this took nearly half an hour. I did a good amount of research and discovered schwinn fitness equipment are good products and are actually made by nautilus. This is my second piece of home equipment and I'm very happy. I also have a treadmill that is too big to get anywhere I want INSIDE my new home and now sits in my garage and doesn't get used. The 430 is easily movable and big enough to be sturdy and small enough not to take up too much room. The unit was put together in a reasonable amount of time-the instructions are easy to figure out. The other instuctions about the various programs are fine too if you aren't an idiot. However, I did have shipping issues-shipping was free and that was a big plus. YEA! But in the D/FW area of Texas they use Eagle who suck. They do deliver whenever you want and the guys did carry the box into my home and put it into the room I requested. Nice. No way could I have moved the box. It's very heavy. The box was badly damaged and a critical piece was bent-the bracket that the flywheel sits on-it's about 1/2 inch thick, very strong, and bent pretty good. Schwinn sent a whole new unit-they were very nice and very easy to deal with, no complaints here about their 800 number. Seems like a waste of money on their end to send a new unit but whatever. The new box was pretty tore up too but luckly everything was OK. Apparently they throw crap around and stack packages on top of other packages. Who knows how the boxes get so damaged. The careless carriers were suppose to take the old one with them and never did. It took three more calls to get it done. Even with that irritation I love the 430 and recommend it. I did call and share my delivery issues with Schwinn--.

After shopping around for a long time me and my wife decided to by this elliptical. We were really skeptical because we were buying online but its totally worth it. I have owned this machine for 2 months now and I must say that I am impressed.
Schwinn is a class company and is a part of Nautilus which supplies most of the gym equipment to the big boys like LA fitness, Ballys etc. We shopped and tried most of the elliptical brands like Proform, Reebok, Horizon etc but nothing is as good as Schwinn. Me and my wife were able to put this together in 2 hrs. I think thats great!!!

When me and my wife were looking around for an exercise machine we were mainly looking for something that was as good as we have in a Gym. Most of the ones in the gym cost around $2500 .. which is ridiculous... and since the bar was set so high we had to shop around for a while and Schwinn 430 was our answer. I think its sturdier than most of the exercise mahines in the gym and its affordable got it for $599 on amazon + free shipping.

Pros:
Very Sturdy, A lot of program options, Smooth, no noise, No battery required,
Affordable(when compared to other high end ones), Ultimate performance, 1 year warranty on parts(most of the other companies give 3 months only), decently compact.

Cons:
Manual that is supplied is not too clear about the instructions (you will still be able to figure out the instructions though)
No Backlight on the exercise monitor screen(not a major issue)
If you are over 250 pounds, it may be a little wobly.

-"Heel rising" during motion despite "articulating foot plate" was a little more than I expected, but not much more than other ellipticals
-I'm only 5'9", but I prefer a 20" stride (found on Sole Ellipticals), probly because I'm use to the gym but 18" is definitely ok
-Display is hard to read. Backlighting (on 418,438) would help.
-The "easiest" setting is a little hard for my wife, probly due to heavy flywheel
-My wife has tripped over the small power cord, so I can understand why battery power on the 418 is a nice option.

Due to the price, I would buy the Schwinn 430 again in a heartbeat. Same award winning mechanics as the 418, 438 but a much cheaper price point. However, if you work out a lot at night and want a backlight, or don't want a power cord across the room, I would seriously consider spending the extra $200 for the 418 despite the problematic Amazon reviews.

UPDATE: Like others, I too had developed a small "squeaking noise" problem. However, my squeaking was located where the moving handlebars pivot, close to the flywheel. A quick call to Schwinn (hold time < 1 min) told me that I probably tightened the handlebars too much. I was told to back off by a quarter turn until the squeaking disappeared. Three quarter turns later, my squeaking is gone! Apparently my obsessive compulsiveness in tightening everything down was too aggressive. I ordered this when Amazon had this in the gold box special for $499 plus free bowflex mat. It was delivered via a shipping company which was great.
We opened the box and everything was packed very secure in the box. My husband started putting it together and all the parts were there and he said the directions were very easy to read. We found the right foot pedal was broken. The plastic was in 3 pieces. I called Schwinn and they are sending the new part. After 1.5 hours my husband got it all put together and now the flywheel is rubbing in the housing. It makes this awful rubbing/grinding noise. I will post what happens in the near future.

The noise worked itself out in a day. This is a great machine. We love the size. It is in the bedroom. I love the programing features. I have used it everyday since we put it together. No problems putting it together and all the parts were there and in perfect shape, the required tools were even included. I assembled it in just over an hour (even though I'm a male and get frustrated easily according to previous review).

I don't know what all the prior fuss is about. I had no trouble reading the assembly manuel and putting the elliptical together all by myself in under 2 hours. And I'm a female! The parts were labeled correctly, formed correcty and there were no missing or malformed pieces. It is on the heavy side, but my being a stubborn individual-I didn't want to wait for my husband to get back home from his trip in a few days and I was anxious to start using it, so I did it myself. I really had no trouble. But being female if I'm lost in out in the real world I ask for directions, and when it comes to assembling items I read the directions very throughly and line everything up before I begin. Men usually don't follow those methods and hence they get frusted, confused then angry.

This is my first elliptical and for the money this is an excellent value with the features you get. You can input your weight and height and customize it for your target fitness goals, like you can on those more expensive health club machines. The display is large and easy to read. I would be nicer if the background lit up, but I can live with it.

The motions are smooth and the machine is very quiet-very easy to hear your music, the TV or carry on conversations and you don't have to compete with the background noise of the machine-much like you have to do with our treadmill. That thing is noisey.

I'm quite pleased with this unit and I really don't see myself purchasing a more expensive higher end one in the near future, unless this one should go belly up-which I doubt, it is so heavy duty and very well made.

The same problem Jeremiah II mentioned with not having the M8x25 bolts happened to me. I used the 6 M8x20 Flat Head allen wrench bolts, that have the blue lock-tight "glue" on them, in attaching the front stabilizer to the main unit, and the main unit to the "roller assembly", with perfect success, ie they weren't used anywhere else. He is also right in saying "...parts changed their part number on each page they were displayed", and I will add that the directions don't specify which M8x20 bolts to use in what location, but that I used the 4 black M8x20 Hex bolts to attach the upper arms to the mast, and the legs to the flywheel. Sorry for not being more specific, but I don't have the manual in front of me. Anyway everything else should fall in place ok. I really like the machine so far, and think it's probably the best mid range out there. I gave 4 instead of 5 stars because the assembly directions stink. The Schwinn 430 arrived promptly and was a breeze to put together - took about 2 hours (1 person for most of the time, 2 people to lift the heavy fly wheel). Unfortunately one of the parts right at one of the last steps was malformed and wouldn't go together. After three calls to Schwinn (call right when they open unless you want to be on hold for 40 minutes) and three different parts being shipped we finally got the right one and had the machine together in less than 10 minutes. The first two times I called, Schwinn insisted on just sending the bushing rather than the entire right foot assembly. On the third try I told them I couldn't get the bushing they kept sending into the right foot assembly - probably a machine does this step in the factory - so then they finally sent me the part I'd originally wanted! They were always very polite whenever I called - just didn't want to send the biggest part first I guess.

As for the machine itself - the ride is very smooth - your heel does come off the foot holder as you exercise but this doesn't bother me. The machine is also really quiet - I could watch TV with it on normal volume. There are definitely enough programs to keep me entertained for quite a while. Lastly, the machine takes up less space than a lot of other elliptical machines - the foot print is smaller than most. I currently have it in the living room and it takes up a lot less space than the love seat.

Amazon offered the best price at $600.00 and free shipping. With the lowest price and the confidence of buying from a recognized and established business rather than some online fly-by-night, Amazon was the obvious choice.

PURCHASE:

Online ordering was, of course, a breeze at Amazon. Shipment was done via "Eagle GL" shipper. Make sure your correct telephone number is included in the ordering process because Eagle will not deliver the product without an appointment. Delivery personnel were ahead of schedule, polite and helpful. The delivery is curbside only and you should make plans to move the 200 lb box to your indoor workout location. You may find it easier to unload the box at the drop point and carry in the individual pieces. The flywheel, however, may take two people or just leave it in the box and slide it up the steps.

CUSTOMER SERVICE / ASSEMBLY:

A real nightmare. Online reviews of other Schwinn ellipticals warn the prospective purchaser that Schwinn has a real problem with packing the proper parts. The 430 is no exception. Two right legs made the unit inoperative. Several calls to customer service, although they have a great bedside manner, netted little results as each representative advised different information and none could correct the problem in a timely fashion. An email to Nautilus, (parent company of Schwinn), upper management did result in action within five minutes of receiving the message after 8:00 PM. The problem was taken care of within three days, (even they had a problem with obtaining the proper part), and they showed a genuine concern for the situation.

The assembly manual rated about a 5 out of 10. Parts were incorrectly labeled and some parts changed their part number on each page they were displayed. Customer service either read from a different diagram or could not understand what was presented to them. Take it slow and as a hint, there is no M8x25 bolt.

FEATURES:

General Use - The ECB system makes for a very quiet, very smooth ride. Parents of newborns will find this welcome when space restrictions require exercise close to their sleeping babe (aside from an occasional electronic beep, but not a nap breaker). The forward and reverse option is an added benefit not found on other machines in this price range.

Size - No excuse here. Though slightly wider than a ski machine, the 430 will fit in any apartment. The front rollers make it possible, (not easy), to move the unit into a corner when not in use.

Electronics - Nice array of feedback though no backlight with this model. Heart rate monitor is lacking, however. When compared to a "Polar" HRM with chest strap the 430's HRM took about 60 seconds to display an accurate reading. Since the sensors are located on the stationary handlebars this feature is not helpful to someone who chooses to use the dynamic handlebars for upper body movement.

BioFit & BioGlide - Big words for "a well polished machine" Essentially this means that the design is such that there are no rough edges, placement of interaction points with the user, (handlebars, electronics, etc.), have been optimized and so forth. Although nice, this is what consumers expect in a product. Anything less would be a poor purchase.

Foot Plate - Although Schwinn claims that the 430 has articulating foot plates, (follow the foot's path to maintain contact with the surface), I found my heel constantly rising as in the motion of a cross-country ski machine. The plates are wide and hard plastic. Even with walking shoes on this is a bit uncomfortable. The plates could use a softer surface and a strap system to hold the foot in place.

PERFORMANCE:

Once you get the unit together you'll find one smooth ride (No reference to the manufacturer of other elliptical equipment intended). Since the unit was just manufactured in 2006 and this review is written after only one use, it is unknown how long the 430 will hold up to its good performance. For now, however, the 430, coupled with another Nautilus product, the Bowflex home gym, may entice you to cancel your exercise club membership, that is if you can get past the ego trip of the mirrors first.

THis is much more stable than the Pro-Form models in the same range. For a gym quality machine, you will have to spend a bit more. But this is a great buy.
